Smith on 23 January 2013 10:40 AM You have a monthly leased SmarterTools license for: SmarterMail, SmarterStats, or SmarterTrack - from ViUX Systems, and for some reason you need to re-activate your license key or move it to a different server. When attempting to do so, you receive an error within the interface of: 'This license key has exceeded the allowed number of activations. To reset activation limits, log into your account at But because it is a leased license key from ViUX, you have not been provided with a direct login for SmarterTools.com. ![]() To activate or reactivate a valid license key, click Activate in the content pane toolbar. For step-by-step activation instructions, please refer to the KB article How To - Activate SmarterMail. Note: Activation of a license key requires the server to contact SmarterTools over port 443 (HTTPS). ![]() What is the cause and needed fix for this issue? The above indicated error is actually related only to purchased (perpetual) license keys. It does not relate to leased license keys, so it is a little misleading. Leased license keys can only be activated once, and it is not possible to 'reset' the activation limit as this error suggests, as that is only possible with a purchased key. This issue is explained in the following text that was contained in the e-mails sent when ordering a new leased license key and found at the bottom of the pages within the gray box at: smartertools.viux.com; smartermail.viux.com; smarterstats.viux.com; & smartertrack.viux.com. ---------- 'Leased SmarterTools Licenses are NON-refundable (billed monthly) and CANNOT be downgraded, upgraded, moved to a different server, or otherwise changed – once issued. If you ever wish to do any of these, you will need to order a NEW replacement license (as desired); and then submit a termination request for the existing license. In so doing, NO refund will be issued for the current license monthly term.' ---------- Therefore the fix for this issue is to order a new license key from: - and then login at: - click the [Account] Tab - click the [Subscriptions] Icon - select the original license subscription - click the [Request Subscription Termination] Link - and submit the resulting cancellation request form with the current date selected to prevent continued billing of the original license key. You will receive your new license key via e-mail, as well as, it will be posted within the subscriptions listing within the control panel. Activate the new license key on your server and disgard the original key as it is now disabled.
